Ghosts series five review this beautifully warm comedy bows out on a high Television

It’s very nicely tailored to everybody's specific history. Also, of course, it's still a comedy, and it’s not trying to be anything more than that. But Ghosts is an antidote to the polarisation of the real world. It’s an example of living alongside people that you don't agree with, and don't necessarily always love having to interact with. Unfortunately, it's the case that people really feel differently about things. Ghosts is a nice contained and safe example; no one has anything to lose by watching it.

Did the episode feel festive to film?

And then suddenly you think, “Well, hang on. We are supposed to be writing a comedy here! For me, that is almost more important. Because one thing it told me is how you connect with the audience and how you tell the story. Once you've tasted that, you don't want to let that magic go because that's what storytelling is – it’s connecting properly with an audience. The thing I get told most often is that it's the only thing that parents watch with their kids.

Ghosts is coming to an end! How does that feel?

Now, Charlotte has updated What To Watch on how filming is proceeding. Ghosts series four is on its way and Charlotte is 'excited' for fans to see it. Broadcast networks aren’t in the habit of doing this, even if plenty of shows originated elsewhere before being remade for American audiences.

Ghosts seems to appeal to a really wide age range, is that something you are proud of?

One of the things that made Ghosts’ first series such a hit was the relationship between Smith-Bynoe and Call the Midwife star Charlotte Ritchie as Alison. The show’s premise – that the ghosts can never leave the grounds of the house – is a tragicomic trope of Britcoms, ie that the protagonists can’t escape their fate. It was Harold’s psychic wound in Steptoe and Son, and now in Ghosts all the spirits are stuck in each others’ company for good as if Button House is a home counties Hotel California.

Ghosts star Charlotte Ritchie: It feels rubbish it's ending!

The final series of Ghosts starts on Friday, October 6 at 8.30pm on BBC One and the full series will be available as a boxset on BBC iPlayer on the same day. But I think if we had a lot longer, I think that would happen a lot more. People would play more, and they'd try to make each other laugh more. But sometimes it feels a bit like, "Can you not make me laugh? I don't have time to do this."

All that remains now are the repeats. “I think, more so than drama, people will go back to comedies they love and want to experience them again and find more in them,” says Baynton. “There are plenty of shows that are comfort. Sometimes you put them on so you can have a nap.” He seems to be suggesting that Ghosts is part of that soporific canon. I look at the four screens, each interviewee giggling happily at the thought of Britain not sobbing over the last episode, but dozing through repeats.

But this season feels higher-stakes because they're not on Plan A now; they're on Plan J. I think the writers are really smart. They knew that it was the right choice. I think we just were just getting to the point where everyone was very comfy in their parts, and it was just the right point to finish. A lot of the feedback I've got from people has been that they think it's cool to quit while you're ahead. As we begin the series, while Alison and Mike search for new ways to keep Button House going after the gatehouse fire, they receive some unexpected news that will bring about major changes for them and the Ghosts.

"And also, just knowing that the ghosts would be so excited. It's such a lovely thing that this baby is coming into a huge family of people." Then, over the video link from his home, Smith-Bynoe gives me a cheeky grin. “And it also makes me a bit happy. I’m like, ‘You can comment all you like on YouTube but you can’t do anything about it. It’s been commissioned – another two times.” A third series of Ghosts was commissioned before the second aired. Charlotte Ritchie became a household name after playing nurse Barbara Hereward in four series of the nation's favourite Sunday night drama, Call the Midwife.

Also, different countries can buy into their own history or their own culture. I love playing her so much because she's just so extreme. Mostly, the feedback I get is about her faces. I get a lot of people sending me pictures of them bending their faces. And I get a lot of catchphrases – like “Off the lawn! No, not specifically, but there’s absolutely no way that we won't work together again.

It wasn't really the last day that did it to me – by then I think I’d pre-grieved! I think that phrase is from Succession, but I’m sure I coined it first! In some ways, it’s cathartic to say, “OK, that's it. That’s the end of the chapter.” Strangely, you get used to that in this job. There are so many goodbyes that we have to see them as a good thing because otherwise, it's just too sad all the time.

They are delighted to have something they can watch all together that isn’t algorithmically pointed towards their generation. “But what really touches me about that is that she’s so much fonder of the ghosts that she would ever admit. I love that because there’s an undertone of real love that is completely reluctant because they drive her up the wall and make things so difficult for Mike, too. “The ghosts are driving her crazy! “Obviously, it’s exaggerated and I’m pushing it for certain effects, but she feels very human, despite being in a kind of cartoony world.

I think it’s the right decision artistically to finish now. Also, we never wanted to be Last of the Summer Wine which did 32 series. I've never played a single character for that long or written a group of characters for that long. You become so attached emotionally to these imaginary people, but also to the real people who are the cast and crew around you. You’re thinking, “This has been this has been a privilege and a joy.” I’ll carry those joyful memories with me for the rest of my life.

It’s sad, but it was the right time to end it. We didn't want people to say, “Oh, it's not as good as it used to be.” You always want to leave them wanting more. I don’t think the sixth series of anything is the best. All the good ones end before then, except perhaps Seinfeld.

It’s good for our stock as a creative engine. They have seen there is a vein of pathos in there as well. When you're the bossy chops of the group, it's easy to just be that. But I think the softening of her relationship with Alison has helped that journey as well.

Ghosts tells the story of a young couple, Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who unexpectedly inherited a grand country estate only to find it is both falling apart and overrun with ghosts. “They are real team players, and that really shines through. “It’s very nicely tailored to everybody’s specific history. Also, of course, it’s still a comedy, and it’s not trying to be anything more than that.
